It is hydroelectric power, here in Abingdon.
Many people have looked at all the water coming over the weir and wondered why its power cannot be used. Well, it can. Water power is nothing new - before the age of cheap fossil fuels, there were thousands of water mills.
So we formed a company to make it happen. We wanted it to benefit our town, so we made it a community enterprise – local people can own it, and be involved. We looked at the technology, and found it needed two massive Archimedes screws. But it is more than that. We live here and we want to make it something attractive that our town is pleased to own, not just an electricity generator but a local amenity. As local investors, we are prepared to spend extra to achieve that.
